The story of this place

The tomb at Mezek was discovered in 1931 and is dated to the fourth century BC. Large stone blocks joined by metal clamps form its monumental structure. A long passage leads through two rectangular rooms into a circular domed chamber. A stone couch and features associated with burial survive. Multiple burials and finds show that the monument’s history cannot be reduced to a single interment. Excavated objects are held in different museum collections. A medieval fortress also stands in the area, but it is a separate site of a different date. The scale of the architecture implies considerable resources, yet cannot by itself identify the person for whom the tomb was originally built.
