The story of this place

Beneath the Largo and Knyaginya Maria Luiza Boulevard, excavated parts of Serdica remain in their original positions. Work associated with the metro revealed streets, urban blocks and buildings used for homes, production and commerce. Their arrangement connects public movement through the city with domestic comfort and the rise of Christianity. Earlier Roman structures survive alongside substantial late antique rebuilding. The Felix mosaic is a particularly clear point of reference within this layered streetscape. The complex should therefore be understood as evidence accumulated over several periods, rather than a reconstruction of one perfectly preserved Roman neighbourhood. Parts of the Largo also accommodate exhibitions and cultural events.
