The story of this place
Sostra near Lomets is a complex comprising a military camp, civilian settlements, a roadside station and cemeteries. It developed between the second and fifth centuries in the Osam valley, along an important connection between the Danube and Thrace. An auxiliary infantry unit occupied the fort, whose defences were repaired and altered after destructive episodes. Civilians outside it supported traffic and military needs. Investigation of the roadside station revealed accommodation and facilities associated with senior travellers and the state postal system. This combination of road, garrison and settlement explains why the archaeological landscape extends beyond the visible fortified enclosure.
What the evidence shows
- The complex lay on the Oescus–Philippopolis route.
- Its remains include a camp, civilian settlements and cemeteries.
