The story of this place
Rusokastro occupies a fortified hill beside the village of the same name. Its historical prominence is associated with Ivan Alexander’s victory over the Byzantine army in 1332. Archaeology adds detail to the medieval town’s organisation, including its citadel, churches and elaborate water supply. The castle reservoir contains supports for vaulted roofing, illustrating the importance of secure water reserves. Pottery and other finds illuminate daily life and wider connections. The story of Rusa and a dragon belongs to local cultural memory. It explains names and revered places in the landscape, but cannot independently prove ancient rituals or establish the historical origin of the fortress name.
