The story of this place
Hisarlaka rises above ancient Pautalia and medieval Velbazhd. Its defences were established in the late fourth or early fifth century and subsequently remodelled. Towers of different shapes show adaptation to the terrain. Use continued through the Middle Ages. A scholarly monograph examines the fortress’s architecture; its present appearance also includes modern restoration.
What the evidence shows
- The defensive system incorporated 14 towers.
- Use is documented in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages.
Hypotheses and open questions
The restored skyline should not be mistaken for an entirely intact ancient fortress.
