The story of this place
Augusta Traiana is the Roman town beneath present-day Stara Zagora. The complex beside its western gate brings together exposed defences, a public square, a street and civic buildings. Successive wall lines demonstrate alterations between the Roman and late antique periods. Street remains make aspects of urban organisation legible, while museum finds provide evidence about the inhabitants. The forum area also hosts modern cultural events, so contemporary performance and spectator facilities should be distinguished from the ancient fabric. The encounter between the old street plan and the modern city makes this a particularly revealing walk. The visible ensemble represents only part of Augusta Traiana, with other structures extending beneath present buildings and streets.
What the evidence shows
- The complex includes the western city gate.
- Fortification walls belong to different building periods.
Hypotheses and open questions
