The story of this place

South of Samokov, Shishmanovo Kale preserves defences, a basilica and monastic structures. It belongs to the settlement history of the Iskar valley and the predecessors of the modern town. Excavation establishes residential and religious activity. Local memory adds stories about Tsar Ivan Shishman, which must be considered separately from the material remains.
