The story of this place

Hotalich reveals both a fortified citadel and the inhabited landscape around it. The upper hill held the stronghold, while houses and working buildings occupied separate quarters on its slopes. A Late Antique fortress preceded the medieval settlement, which reused the strategic position. The churches also preserve successive phases: in one location a medieval church overlies an earlier one, while another reused a Roman gravestone as an altar. Excavation thus illuminates continuity and change in local architecture. When exploring, visitors should distinguish conserved original masonry from reconstructed elements added to make the settlement’s layout and buildings easier to understand.
