The story of this place
Nicopolis ad Nestum is associated with Trajan’s victories over the Dacians and Roman development of the Mesta valley. The remains near Garmen allow visitors to follow defensive walls, a gate and towers of different shapes. Excavations in the 1980s exposed much of the southern defensive line. Water-supply elements and production installations have also been recorded in the surrounding area. The town’s foundation and every visible wall should not automatically be assigned to the same building year: ancient towns were repeatedly altered. Municipal conservation and interpretation projects add a modern chapter to the site’s history. Exposed remains represent only part of the ancient settlement.
What the evidence shows
- The southern gate and sections of the defensive walls have been excavated.
- Circular and rectangular towers are documented.
Hypotheses and open questions
Not every visible structure should be dated to the town’s Trajanic foundation.
