The story of this place
Veliki Preslav was the Bulgarian state’s capital in the ninth and tenth centuries and an important centre of writing and art. Its archaeological reserve presents palatial and religious buildings, fortifications and evidence of production. Museum displays add details that low surviving walls cannot convey: painted ceramics, inscriptions, jewellery and seals. The Preslav gold treasure and ceramic elements of church decoration are especially important. Lead seals document written communication and administration. A visit has two complementary parts, exploring architectural remains and examining objects. Some displayed images are replicas, so museum labels matter. The reserve presents the results of archaeological investigation rather than the fully reconstructed appearance of the medieval capital.
What the evidence shows
- The museum holds the Preslav gold treasure.
- Painted ceramics and lead seals are important parts of the collection.
Hypotheses and open questions
Excavated plans and partial restoration do not securely reconstruct every lost building volume.
Myths and local traditions
The sources consulted do not document a reliable local tradition. We do not invent legends to fill the gap.
