The story of this place
The Eastern Mound near Karanovo contains a wealthy funerary complex of the first century AD. Rescue investigations beginning in 2008 uncovered a chariot, a grave and a ritual area. The discovery informs research into burial practices and prestigious possessions among the local aristocracy at the beginning of the Roman period. The site has been presented as an open-air museum, but displaying original materials brings conservation challenges. Official statements document the need for protection and coordination between institutions. It is a separate place from Karanovo’s prehistoric settlement mound, so photographs and dates must not be interchanged. Anyone planning a visit should obtain current access information from the local museum.
