The story of this place

Churches, chapels and cells carved into the cliffs near Ivanovo formed a monastic landscape in the Rusenski Lom valley. Particularly important are thirteenth- and fourteenth-century murals reflecting the artistic culture of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Painted compositions, architectural arrangements and surviving inscriptions provide different kinds of evidence for its religious environment. The museum associates the complex with royal patrons including Ivan Alexander. UNESCO inscribed the rock-hewn churches in 1979. Conservation concerns not only the paintings but also the rock itself: erosion and collapses form part of the monument’s history. Individual monastic spaces survive to different degrees and are not all accessible.
