The story of this place

Tell Yunatsite is part of a larger prehistoric settlement, not an isolated burial mound. Accumulated layers record repeated occupation and rebuilding. Its Copper Age defences, including a rammed-clay wall and ditch, are particularly significant for understanding community organisation and protection. Pottery, craft evidence and gold finds add to the picture of technical skills and exchange. Research has a long international history, with finds held by the Pazardzhik museum. The popular description “earliest town” is an interpretation of social organisation; a large fortified prehistoric settlement is the more cautious formulation. The excavation remains a research site, so viewing arrangements differ from those of an unrestricted outdoor attraction.
