The story of this place
Nicopolis ad Istrum was founded by Emperor Trajan following victory over the Dacians. Its location linked important routes between the Danube frontier, the Balkan Mountains and the Black Sea region. A rectangular street grid organised the square, public buildings and residential blocks. Drains beneath the paving and a long aqueduct reveal the infrastructure needed to maintain urban life. Inscriptions and locally minted coins illuminate a diverse population and Greek-speaking civic administration. Parts of the city changed during Late Antiquity. Its inclusion on UNESCO’s Tentative List should be distinguished from inscription on the World Heritage List.
What the evidence shows
- The street network was planned around right-angle intersections.
- Drainage channels run beneath the paving.
Hypotheses and open questions
The archaeological plan combines Roman and later phases; the city was not identical in every century.
Myths and local traditions
The sources consulted do not document a reliable local tradition. We do not invent legends to fill the gap.
