Gradishte, Gabrovo
A Late Antique fortified settlement with houses, church architecture and evidence of everyday life.

The story of this place
Gradishte above Gabrovo preserves a fortified settlement from Late Antiquity. Archaeological work began in 1920, with later campaigns examining additional areas. In 2018, the museum team documented three fifth–sixth-century buildings in the northern sector and recovered coins, brooches, lamps, household objects and military equipment. Known structures also include a church with a baptismal room. These discoveries connect the defensive walls to the everyday needs and religious life of the community living within them. Objects kept in the museum complement the surviving low walls, allowing visitors to understand activities that the architectural remains alone cannot fully convey.
