The story of this place

Deultum was established under Vespasian in the AD 70s for veterans of the Eighth Augustan Legion. The ruins near Debelt show how a Roman town organised public space, water and bathing. Investigated features include heated baths, streets, drains and religious installations. Cemeteries surrounding the settlement add evidence about its inhabitants. Over subsequent centuries the town changed in appearance and function, and medieval Develt belongs to this longer regional history. The archaeological reserve has a museum that brings excavated structures and portable finds into the same narrative. The extensive site remains under study, so the visitor route presents selected areas rather than a finished reconstruction of everything that once existed.

Hypotheses and open questions

Only part of the ancient town is excavated and displayed; its phases should not be merged.
