The story of this place

The archaeological level beneath Saint Sofia preserves part of Serdica’s eastern cemetery. Over time, this burial landscape became a setting for Christian worship. Different tomb forms and masonry techniques show changes in construction and funerary practice. Remains of three earlier churches precede the present basilica. The nearby tomb of Honorius is known for its Christian inscription and painted decoration. Seen together, these structures connect architecture with individual remembrance without collapsing several centuries into a single period. The functioning church above the display adds another layer to the long use of the location. The subterranean museum is a branch of Sofia’s regional history museum.

Hypotheses and open questions

Not every tomb has an identifying inscription; the displayed evidence does not establish a full biography of Honorius.
