The story of this place
The fortress occupies a rocky summit above Gradat, overlooking much of the surrounding mountain landscape. Archaeology distinguishes late antique and medieval phases. The place is associated with the fourteenth-century Rhodope ruler Momchil, but its history began earlier. Surviving walls and occupation remains show how natural rock was incorporated into the defences. Work by Smolyan Municipality and the regional museum has connected research with a visitor route. The panorama is an important part of understanding the monument because it explains the strategic choice of summit. Modern stories celebrating Momchil should be read alongside the archaeological sequence, rather than replacing it.
What the evidence shows
