The story of this place

The name Storgosia passed from an earlier settlement to a Roman road station within present-day Pleven. During Late Antiquity, a fortified settlement developed on naturally defensible ground in Kaylaka. Excavation revealed gates, towers, houses, a granary and a substantial Christian basilica. Pottery, coins and weapons document life during the fourth to sixth centuries. The layout shows a community combining defence, food storage and religious activity. Some finds are displayed at Pleven Regional History Museum.

Documented evidence

What the evidence shows

  • Excavated structures include a basilica, granary and fortress gates.
  • The Late Antique settlement is documented in the fourth–sixth centuries.

Hypotheses and open questions

The Roman road station and the Kaylaka fortification are not the same topographical phase.

Myths and local traditions

Tradition — not archaeological evidence

The municipal account records local traditions linking the fortress with Tsar Ivan Shishman’s final days. This is folklore and does not prove his presence in any specific building.
