The story of this place
Tsepina occupies a high Rhodope hill above Dorkovo. Its historical narrative is connected with changing Bulgarian–Byzantine frontiers and Despot Alexios Slav. The ruins demonstrate the fortified nature of the position, while a nearby exhibition explains archaeological research. Prepared with the involvement of Pazardzhik Regional History Museum, the display includes material from its collections. Comparing the site with the exhibition is especially useful: the landscape explains the strategic setting, while objects and plans offer more specific evidence for life inside the stronghold. The place should be read through both kinds of evidence, without treating every popular account of a siege as established history.
What the evidence shows
- The fortress is associated with Despot Slav.
- A nearby exhibition includes archaeological finds from Pazardzhik Museum.
