The story of this place
The Episcopal Basilica forms part of the early Christian heritage of the ancient town beneath Sandanski. Discovered in 1989, it is presented as a separate component of the archaeological park. Its plan includes a courtyard, narthex, church spaces and a baptistery. The surviving pulpit and clergy seating help explain the organisation of worship. Mosaics and marble furnishings demonstrate investment in an elaborate ecclesiastical setting. This monument must be distinguished from the Basilica of Bishop John beneath the Archaeological Museum. They belong to the same urban Christian landscape but are not the same church. Comparing them offers a clearer view of the town’s religious history.
What the evidence shows
- The complex includes a baptistery and courtyard.
- A pulpit, clergy seating and mosaic decoration survive.
Hypotheses and open questions
