The story of this place

Castra Martis illustrates changing approaches to protecting an important route through northwestern Bulgaria. Its small square fort and larger castellum belong to separate building phases, rather than one original plan. The Late Roman defences occupied a place already settled during the Thracian period. The road connected Bononia at Vidin with Singidunum at Belgrade through the Vrashka Chuka area. Standing masonry makes the military layout unusually legible, while finds displayed in the local collection add a different perspective: agricultural and craft tools show the everyday work needed to sustain the garrison as well as its defensive role.

Documented evidence

What the evidence shows

  • The complex includes a quadriburgium and a separately built castellum.
  • Excavations identified earlier Thracian occupation.

Hypotheses and open questions

The two parts belong to different phases; one date should not be assigned to all visible remains.

Myths and local traditions

The sources consulted do not document a reliable local tradition. We do not invent legends to fill the gap.
