The story of this place

Kaliakra is a fortified headland with ancient and medieval remains. Excavations exposed a bath, a tomb and Christian churches, while its defensive lines belong to different building phases. A museum display in a cave complements the ruins. The National Museum of History also reports finds from the medieval cemetery within the Inner Town: earrings, buttons and varied coins. These illuminate residents’ connections with the wider world and complement the architectural evidence. Legends about the cape belong to cultural memory; they do not establish the historicity of the events described.

Documented evidence

What the evidence shows

  • Excavations exposed an ancient bath and medieval churches.
  • The fortress has more than one defensive line.

Hypotheses and open questions

The maidens’ story is not established as a specific historical event.

Myths and local traditions

Tradition — not archaeological evidence

A legend tells of forty maidens tying their hair together and jumping into the sea to escape captivity. This is a folk tradition.
