The story of this place

Cherven developed on a rocky ridge containing an earlier sixth-century Byzantine fortification. During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries it became an important centre of the Second Bulgarian Empire, with a citadel, residential districts, craft production and an ecclesiastical establishment. It became a metropolitan see after 1235. Excavations uncovered houses, churches, water-supply passages and objects connected with trade and everyday life. The surviving defensive tower remains a recognisable element of the fortifications. Ottoman conquest in 1388 altered the town’s fortunes. The archaeological reserve now offers a view of an entire urban settlement rather than a single isolated castle.
