The story of this place
Saint Spas Hill commands a broad view across the basin, helping explain its selection as a fortified position. Archaeological research associates the stone fortress with the reign of Valens in the fourth century. The visitor complex connects military history with Christian heritage and displays about local life. It also has two distinct settings: the hilltop fortress and cultural buildings in Belchin village. Surviving foundations have been incorporated into extensive modern restoration. Consequently, the present tower silhouettes are a museum presentation of ancient architecture rather than completely preserved Roman buildings. This distinction helps visitors appreciate both the archaeological remains and the modern work that makes their plan easier to understand.
What the evidence shows
- Fortress construction is dated to the reign of Valens, 364–378 CE.
- The complex also includes Saint Petka church in Belchin.
Hypotheses and open questions
