The story of this place
Chetinyova Mound near Starosel was investigated in 2000 by Georgi Kitov’s team. Its monumental entrance, stairways, corridor and circular chamber reveal an elaborate architectural design. A granite retaining wall defines the mound’s circumference, while internal decoration demonstrates specialised stoneworking. The complex is interpreted in relation to a ruler’s cult and funerary commemoration. That interpretation does not establish the identity of a particular buried king. Chetinyova belongs to a wider archaeological landscape around Starosel containing other mounds. The Horizont temple is a separate monument with its own architecture, and photographs or discoveries from it should not automatically be attributed to Chetinyova.
