The story of this place
Kaleto above Smolyan occupies a fortified position in the rocky Turluka area. The official visitor account places it within the late antique defensive network of the mountains. The excavated southern wall gives a clear impression of scale and of the limits imposed on building by the terrain. Visibility towards other strongholds helps explain regional communication. The museum’s institutional history records investigations beginning in 1998 and later campaigns. Today a walking path and conservation make the remains easier to interpret. Its defensive role, however, does not mean that the names and everyday experiences of all its occupants are known.
What the evidence shows
- The southern defensive wall has been completely excavated.
- The museum records excavations beginning in 1998.
