The story of this place
Misionis stands near Targovishte and is also known by the older local name Krumovo Kale. Research has exposed a fortified town with early Christian basilicas, residential districts and later medieval occupation. A basilica and an episcopal residence of the fifth and sixth centuries are among its important structures. Coins, jewellery, weapons and other finds help reconstruct the inhabitants’ connections and daily life; selected objects are displayed in Targovishte’s archaeological exhibition. Excavation covers only part of the settlement, so the visible ruins do not represent its entire area. The name Krumovo Kale preserves a tradition connecting the place with Khan Krum, but that tradition alone cannot locate his famous victory over Nikephoros.
What the evidence shows
- Early Christian churches and residential districts have been exposed.
- Finds from the town are held by Targovishte Museum.
Hypotheses and open questions
Much of the town and the relationships between building phases require further research.
Myths and local traditions
A local tradition connects Krumovo Kale with Krum’s victory over Nikephoros. The tradition is separate from established archaeological history.
