The story of this place

The Sveshtari tomb was discovered in 1982 within the mound cemetery of Sboryanovo. Built of limestone blocks in the first quarter of the third century BC, it comprises an entrance passage and three vaulted chambers. Ten female figures in the principal chamber combine human and plant forms, with surviving colour and painting enriching the architectural decoration. The monument reflects local Getic culture in contact with the Hellenistic world. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 1985. A controlled internal climate requires visits in limited groups. Identification of the buried ruler by a particular personal name is not treated here as established.
