The story of this place
Provadia–Solnitsata is an archaeological complex whose principal prehistoric development is dated approximately between 5600 and 4350 BC. Local brine supplied the raw material for salt production using ceramic vessels and heat. Production methods and settlement defences changed over time. Stone fortifications, houses and specialised installations connect economic activity with the organisation of the community. Systematic excavations began in 2005 and involve researchers from several disciplines. Later phases include burial structures and a Thracian residence, so the place should not be treated as a single moment in prehistory. Salt helps explain its economic importance, but descriptions such as a prehistoric “mint” are modern metaphors, not evidence that coins were struck here. Visitor access depends on conditions at the outdoor site.
