The story of this place

Aquae Calidae developed around hot springs near today’s Burgas Mineral Baths. Roman bathing buildings and later defences made it an important stop on routes linking the coast with inland Thrace. Excavations uncovered pools, heating installations, masonry and numerous coins. The medieval settlement bore names connected with its baths, while a later Ottoman bath added another architectural layer. Modern interpretation combines archaeology with a restored bathing building. Further investigation continues to refine the layout of the complex. Accounts of rulers receiving treatment here come from different written traditions and should be distinguished from objects and structures directly documented by excavation.
