What makes it special?

Sofia Province is administered from Sofia, although Sofia City is a separate province. This guide therefore puts the province's real visitor gateways first: Samokov, Botevgrad, Etropole, Ihtiman and the historic town of Koprivshtitsa.

Rather than one dominant provincial capital, the region has several town hubs serving Rila, the Balkan Mountains, the Sofia basin and the Sub-Balkan valleys. Travel planning should begin with the town closest to the chosen mountain or heritage route.

  • Samokov and Rila
  • Balkan mountain towns
  • Koprivshtitsa heritage

Walking route

Use Sofia only as the administrative and transport gateway, then focus on one cluster: Samokov and Rila, Botevgrad and Pravets, Etropole and the Balkan foothills, or Koprivshtitsa and the Revival landscape.
