The story of this place

Tsarevets formed one of the fortified cores of Tarnovgrad, capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Its archaeological story includes a palace, patriarchal complex, houses, service buildings and defensive works. The palace underwent several alterations between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, combining residence, government and ceremony. Successive gates and towers protected the principal entrance. The position above the Yantra joined natural defence with command of the surrounding landscape. Today a visit encounters excavated foundations alongside later reconstructions, whose differing levels of survival should be understood separately. Tsarevets was part of a broader urban ensemble that also included Trapezitsa.

Documented evidence

What the evidence shows

  • The palace complex was altered during the twelfth–fourteenth centuries.
  • The main entrance was protected by successive gates and towers.

Hypotheses and open questions

The reconstructed appearance is not wholly surviving medieval fabric; reconstruction should be distinguished from original remains.
